The Howick Way

“What is distinctive about a Christian based school? It’s something to do with ethos atmosphere and the way in which people feel valued.”

Archbishop Dr Rowan Williams

* * *

At Howick we create an ethos and atmosphere where everyone feels valued as a unique person.

Our aim is to provide a safe environment in which our children are valued and can find security, acceptance, reassurance and an opportunity to develop their potential. We aim to create a caring and happy community in which our Christian values are upheld.

Our school is a place where:

∗ Children and adults alike are engaged on a life-time’s journey.

∗ Each person is uniquely valued and their gifts and potential are nurtured and developed.

∗ Each member of the school knows that they belong to all the other members and accept the responsibility of caring for one another and for God’s world.

∗ Christ is the centre of our community where we live, love and learn.

At Howick we have 6 core Christian Values and they are at the centre of everything that we do. We believe these values empower our pupils to develop their spirituality and guide them in personal development as effective learners and good citizens.   Each half term we focus on a different value.   This is done explicitly through our Collective Worship time, but also through our curriculum. Children have regular opportunities to reflect on each value and to develop an understanding of the value in action. Each Friday, in our Celebration Assembly, we will acknowledge children who have demonstrated these values.

Our Values

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:13

Friendship

Lunchtimes at Howick are always a joyful time, where we see our value of friendship in action! It’s wonderful to watch the whole school playing together, with our Class 4 children leading games that everyone can enjoy. Our Year 6 pupils also love the opportunity to be “pairers,” supporting our Class 1 children. This not only allows the older children to take on a caring role but also gives our youngest pupils a familiar, friendly role model to help them feel confident and supported in school.

Friendship in Action
Year 6 took great delight in reading with their new pairers, sharing stories and offering support to our younger pupils. Moments like these beautifully demonstrate how we live out our Christian value of friendship at Howick, helping children build confidence, form meaningful connections, and enjoy learning together.

A beautiful friendship tapestry created by Class 2.

Well done to our student council for presenting a worship based on friendship.

Our Chair of Governors attended and sent a letter of thanks.

Hope

Well done to our Student Council for leading Collective Worship and sharing their circles of hope.

We look forward to spreading hope during the season on Advent.

The children have been reflecting on their hopes for themselves and others.

Trust

This amazing art work has been created by our Class 4 children.

Following a whole school Collective Worship, led by our Student Council, all of our classes have helped to produce this wall display.

During Collective worship we have explored the many words that finish the sentence God is... , developing out understanding of God and the many aspects of his Character and seeing that we can trust in him.

We have looked at stories in the Bible where people have shown trust in God, using their examples to influence our own lives.

Thankfulness

We have been using our prayer and reflection area as a space for thinking about what we are thankful for.
